How to prepare for a 21-day Pilates challenge
Three weeks, one plan, and a little prep. Here's how to set up your week before day one so the Pilates X Strength 21-Day Challenge fits your real life.

Why 21 days works (and what it isn't)
You may have heard that it takes 21 days to build a habit. The research is more honest than that. In a well-known 2010 study, Lally and colleagues followed people adding one new daily behavior. On average it took about 66 days for the behavior to feel automatic, and the range ran from 18 days to an estimated 254 days. In other words, there's no magic number.
So why three weeks? Because 21 days is long enough to feel real change in your routine and short enough to commit to. It gives you a clear start, a clear finish and a plan for every day in between. Think of it as a strong start, not the finish line. The same study also found that missing a single day didn't knock people off track. That's good news for busy weeks.
The Pilates X Strength 21-Day Challenge at a glance
The challenge runs Monday, November 30 to Sunday, December 20, 2026. It's a new daily schedule with Maghan, and you choose a Reformer track or a Mat track. Each week has six training days and one rest day. Choose Core (four priority classes a week) or Complete (all six). Classes run 30 to 45 minutes, walk days include a 20-minute walk, and the daily goal is 10,000+ steps. You also get Challenge Meal Plans with shopping lists.
Your prep checklist for the week before
Give yourself the week of November 23 to get ready. Tick these off one at a time:
- Pick your track. Reformer or Mat. Choose the one you can do most days at home or in the studio.
- Gather your gear. Reformer track: Reformer, short or long box, hand weights, ankle weights, booty band and Pilates ring. Mat track: mat, box or step, hand weights, ankle weights, booty band, Pilates ball, foam roller and yoga block. Don't have it all? You can still take part.
- Set up the app. Download Pilates Project on your phone and sign in on your TV too, so class is one tap away. It also works on Apple Watch.
- Connect your trackers. Link Apple Health and MyFitnessPal so your steps and meals live in one place.
- Build your plan. Use the calculator on the prep page to get your personal calorie and heart-rate plan.
- Schedule your classes. Put each class in your calendar like a meeting. Pick a time you can protect.
- Plan your meals. Look through the Challenge Meal Plans, pick your first week and shop from the list.
- Prep a recovery plan. Decide on your rest day, set a bedtime and keep a foam roller or mat handy for stretching.
- Take a baseline. Note how you feel (energy, sleep, mood) and one simple benchmark, like how long you can hold a plank. Skip the scale and skip the before photos. This challenge is about getting stronger.
During the challenge
Busy week? Do your priority classes. Life happens, especially in December. On a packed week, focus on the four priority classes. That's the Core plan, and it still counts.
Walk it out. On walk days, a 20-minute walk keeps you moving and helps you hit 10,000+ steps. Take a call on foot, walk after dinner or bring the kids.
Protect your sleep. The CDC recommends at least 7 hours of sleep a night for adults. Sleep is when your body recovers from training, so treat bedtime like part of the plan.
Missed a day? Just start again tomorrow. Don't try to double up. Pick up with the next class on the schedule. One missed day won't undo your progress. What matters is getting back to it.
Check in with your baseline. Halfway through, notice how you feel. Is that plank a little longer? Are you less tired at 3 p.m.? Those are real wins.
After day 21
On December 20, take your baseline again and see how far you've come. Then keep going with The Method in the Pilates Project app, so you don't lose your rhythm once the challenge ends. Three weeks is a strong start. What you do next is how it becomes your routine.

Questions
Do I need a Reformer to join?
No. Choose the Mat track and train at home. You can also take part without every piece of gear on the list.
How long are the classes?
Classes run 30 to 45 minutes, six days a week, with one rest day. On a busy week, the four priority classes (Core) keep you on track.
What if I miss a day?
Pick up with the next class on the schedule. You don't need to make it up. Research on habit building suggests one missed day has little effect on your progress over time.
